BUT, NO. The Highway Department want to tear down the one-lane bridge and replace it with one of those stark concrete numbers. They’ll probably straighten out a few curves while they’re at it, too. All in the name of improving safety, of course.
Will it be safer? We doubt it. Unless driving habits are due for a radical overnight change, most people will see those straightened curves and a nice, wide bridge as just an invitation to stomp on it. If speeding up traffic makes for increased safety, we’d like to see the statistics to support such a contention.
Sharp-eyed readers will notice that we haven’t even mentioned how much more picturesque the old iron truss bridges are. We know the engineers won’t listen to things like that; we’re still hopeful they may reconsider some of their current mania to “upgrade” every country road and country bridge into a high-speed nightmare. □
