Assisting Allen as coinstructor at the training sessions sponsored by the Virginia Tech Extension Division will be Charles Swaim, a national sheepshearing champion of Drakesville, Iowa, who demonstrates a Chicagobased manufacturer’s sheep shearing equipment.
“The object of the schools is to teach the best, fastest and easiest ways to harvest Virginia’s annual wool crop of over a million pounds. Like many other farm tasks, shearing the sheep requires know-how, proper equipment and certain techniques if the fleece quality is to be safeguarded,” Allen explained.
“Each of the schools will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until about 3 p.m. They will start with shearing demonstrations after which the students will sharpen their own techniques under the supervision of the instructors,” Allen added. Allen announced the schools are open, without charge, to everyone interested in learning or improving their skills for a lucrative trade.
