THE ANNUAL road hearing last week to air complaints and hear comments of the public followed traditional lines to a point when procedure was reversed , and a request was made to cancel planned “improvements.”
A petition from a large group of Laurel Mills citizens, which was presented by Mrs. Esther Settle, requested that the overhead truss bridge on Route 618 be left as it is instead of being replaced by a new cement bridge.
Mrs. Settle said members of the community fear increased speed on the “improved” section, and stated that at least 30 children live in the immediate area. She, as well as some others, considered the present bridge — a one-way structure which must be approached cautiously, — a safety factor, rather than a hazard.
However, A. C. Hensley and Mrs. Lucy Tripplett each voiced" pleas for the relocation and construction of the bridge. Said Mrs. Triplett: “This one ic nnt wiHp pnnncrh nr hi?h
