Granville Eastham said that “more money doesn’t mean better education. A certain amount is required, but when you go into the frill, I don’t think the taxpayers get a fair return on their money.”
Eastham said he’d like to see the teachers get the same raise as other county employes. “I don’t see why Ned Jones would get a five per cent raise and the teachers would get eight per cent,” Eastham said, adding that he didn’t know how much Ned Jones would get. It was Eastham who said, “not everybody gets an annual cost of living raise and a step increase,” and he noted there is “no scarcity” of teachers.
Pete Luke said that the state compensation committee has said that state employes will receive a 4.8 per cent increase. “They have said there is enough money for that mush increase,” Luke said.
