W.G. Eastham said he could appreciate the teachers’ request for more money. “I think the teachers should be raised some,” he said, adding that “everybody I talk too has been hit one way or another” by the recession. Eastham said a “man with a herd of cattle is worth 50 per cent of what he was 18 months ago.”
Supervisor Herbert Foster said he wasn’t against raising salaries, but he was worried, “with the economy the way it is.” Foster said he was concerned about Rappahannock’s “little one-horse farmers, and that’s where the money’s coming from...we don’t have a fixed income.” Foster went on, “Higher education is nice, college is nice, but we’ve got to have somebody to work on these farms.” Foster said he expected that some of the people involved in Watergate “went through college two or three times.”
