RAPPAHANNOCK’S Planning Commissioners will host a public hearing at their May meeting on requests for a rezoning and a variance to the subdivision ordinance for the J.L. Williams estate, But it took the planners, and some members of th& audience, a little time Wednesday night (April 16) to come to a consensus on whether or not the public hearing was necessary.

Fanning Baumgardner, from the county zoning office staff, told the Commissioners that attorney T.C. Lea had requested the rezoning and variance on behalf of the heirs of the J.L. Williams estate. They want to rezone a tract off Route 626 south of the town of Washington from A-l to RS-1 (residential subdivision). They propose to divide the tract into eight lots, ranging in size from a little more than two acres to more than six acres. Baumgardner said the land is now zoned for no division of land less than 25 acres. If the rezoning were granted, the minimum lot size would be five acres. Several of the proposed lots would not be that size, hence the variance was needed.

Baumgardner suggested that the appropriate action for the Planning Commission at this time would be to vote to advertise the requests for public hearing. Chairman Herbert Barksdale didn’t think so. He said he was “under the impression that we would take action here tonight.” Baumgardner said the action taken by the Planning Commissioners had to be based on “information coming out of a public hearing.”
