In addition to the teachers’ raises, Norton noted a major increase in the budget is for administration. Next year, Rappahannock County, which has shared administrative costs with Warren County since 1918, will have a separate school superintendent and office. This means additional salaries, for a superintendent, assistant and secretary. It also means that the school board will have to obtain office and storage space. Norton noted that the costs of providing public transportation to the schools have risen sharply and that Rappahannock will have to replace two school buses this year.
Norton said that teachers’ salaries in Rappahannock are less than those in surrounding counties at the “top” of the scale, and slightly higher than some counties at the bottom of the scale. He said that the cost of living increase for the past year had been 12 to 14 per cent, and the school board’s proposed budget reflected a 12 per cent increase, while proposed teachers’ salaries for next year only reflected an eight per cent increase.□
