Editor: As chairman of the Rappahannock Clean-Up Committee, I would like to thank the many people who donated the time, effort and trucks to help restore the natural beauty of our country side. I would especially like to thank the many young people who helped. It may seem incomprehensable, but well over 1,000 bags of trash were picked up along the roads. Many landowners are proud enough of their farms and houses that they keep their road frontage clean year around. Many others don’t even bother on cleanup day. I urge all citizens to look at their road front. If it is not clean, please pick it up NOW!
We ran several spot checks all around the county to see what percentage of the litter was disposables. Eighty-five to 98percent of all trash picked up was disposable beer cans and bottles and half the paper picked up was beer containers. I have nothing against beer, but the empties don’t belong on the roadside.
