Vietnam were largely inhabited by women and children. The cities of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden and London were occupied by women and children when they were bombed and destroyed or badly damaged. In future wars, it is probably that either conventional or thermonuclear weapons, targeted on cities, would, like ERA affect members of both sexes equally. The question of women and war is a phoney issue.

I can’t expect the paper to provide room for me to answer all the misassertions in the letter I’m addressing, but perhaps there is room to say what ERA won’t do: It won’t prevent wives from deserting husbands or vice versa any more than present laws and customs do. It won’t result in any more wives or husbands working to support their families if they aren’t already interested in doing that. It won’t keep wives from murdering husbands or husbands from beating wives and children. It will only require the courts, when the issue is brought, to consider whether or not a man or a woman, by virtue of a law enacted by a state or the Congress, has been
