billion to the national economy. In 1974 one out of every five dollars of gross farm income came from exports. Exports take the production from one acre out of every four in this country. Nationwide, one out of every eight farm jobs depends on exports.
Nationally, in tobacco products, Virginia ranks in the top five and in production of peanuts for export, the Old Dominion ranks in the top ten.
Although tobacco is the leading agricultural export in Virginia, there are several other commodities which contribute significantly to the Virginia economy. Wheat, feed grains, soybean and soybean oil take up a large proportion of Virginia's exports. Meat, fruits, vegetables and poultry are also exported <a sufficient quantities to make a positive impact on the states’ economy.
It is extremely difficult to measure accurately which products grown in Virginia are exported, said Coffey, since Virginia is a major agricultural export area for this country with its Hampton Roads facilities. This year it may be harder to measure, due to the decline in production of Virginia farmers.
However, it appears that Virginia exports are approximately the same as the national average of 20 to 25 per cent. This is a substantial portion of agricultural products produced and contributes to a higher average income for Virginia farmers, and others affected by the export trade.
