After a short recess, Alson Atkins headed the list of speakers in favor of the ski area. “I’m sorry all these newcomers are disappointed,” he began. “They came here to get away from it all hoping to find that the rest of the world is going to grow and Rappahannock County’s going to stay put,” said Atkins.
He acknowledged that the ski area had failed financially two or three times but maintained that this was not out of the ordinary, arguing that the ski area needed to expand in order to be successful. “There are a lot worse things that could come off that mountain than an Alpine slide,” he contended. He insisted that the county Board of Supervisors would manage to control any adverse impact from ski area expansion into a year-round recreation center.
Hone Concession Promised? Dr. Krebser asked Atkins, who operates a horseback riding business in Sperryville, if he’d been promised the horse concession planned for summer operations at the ski area. “I said I was going to put horses up tfcere,” Atkins replied but added that he’d never been promised the concession. Wesley Harris asked Atkins for his definition of an “outsider.” “People who’ve moved here in the last six months, or year...people who aren’t taxpayers,” Atkins answered.
