Charlie Minion, Washington resident and rescue squad member, stated that he wasn’t sure the expanded ski area operations would be an asset to the county but feh it should be given a chance. He suggested imposing a bond to guarantee the ski area would bear the cost of road improvement and proposed some attention be directed towards the trash situation since the ski customers in a weekend would total more than the entire county population.
“If it becomes so bad we can’t live with it,” concluded Manson, “has everyone forgotten about picketing?”
Both Sam Snead and Ray Smoot spoke in favor of the ski area’s request because it would be "a good thing for young people to have a place to go.”
Safeguards Requested
Mrs. Sally Sharp, Harris Hollow resident with a commercial orchard and small commercial cattle herd, said she viewed the reopening as a positive step. However, she added that the BZA should understand the probable results of expanded operations and ensure safeguards by asking the Supervisors to request an environmental impact study from the state and protect agricultural, forestal and open space land in the Harris Hollow vicinity from being reassessed and taxed on the basis of ski area property values.
Diana Bird asked Mrs. Sharp if she’d been reassured by testimony given at the hearing. Mrs. Sharp answered that she’d been reassured by reading the entire special use permit application on file in the Zoning office, particularly the last paragraph that stipulated the permit would be cancelled if all conditions established by the BZA were not met.
