The examination which Wakefield will initiate is designed to determine not only the student’s abilities in basic English and mathematics, but also his mastery of basic, elementary scientific, historical, and geographical content. By the end of the seventh grade, Lynn argues, a student should know not only how to read with comprehension, write compositions, and do the various math operations, he should also know, for example, who Julius Caesar was, what “Medieval” means, where the U.S.S.R. is on the map, what longitude and latitude mean, and how to explain such scientific phenomena as lightning and sound.
The examination, Lynn» says, has forced the school to define in more precise terms the skills and body of knowledge which the elementary student should master, and has helped the school to organize further the curriculum toward more specific goals.
By current standards the content to be covered by the exam might be considered advanced, Lynn adds, but a generation or two ago, it would have been seen as normal.
The school is currently preparing a handbook which will give a detailed description of the skills and content to be covered by the examination.
