other people in this general area of the United States refer to the small Virginia community as “little Washington” it is an identity that has been intended as a compliment and based upon respect and affection for that for which the community stands.
We, who use the term “little Washington,” have done so with a nostalgia for the old days, and with the belief that the small Virginia community represents the finest traditions of the past which include not only patriotism, but also good manners, courtesy, warm hospitality, gracious living, lovely old homes, clean air, no congestion and no crime.
Afterall, the identity “little Washington" has been around a long, long time, for over a century, in fact.
For example, I have read letters written by both my great grandmother and my grandmother when they, as young women, visited with relatives in what they called “little Washington.” The term then, as now, had a connotation of respect and affection.
1 feel sure that the young men who are getting ready to open their restaurant, “The Inn at Little Washington,” have the same pride and affection in and for their community that others have.
Undoubtedly, many of the people who will visit "The Inn in Little Washington” will share the same yearning and hunger as the rest of us desiring to experience the gentleness and relaxation usually associated with such small Virginia communities as “little Washington.”
From a Virginian with strong family ties into Rappahannock, Fauquier, and Culpeper Counties and a long-time resident of the “big” Washington (DC).
