The third important bill was a tax indexing bill which would have saved the taxpayers hundreds of dollars, especially in the lower income brackets. The higher the income the less tax relief. It came before the House Finance Committee and was passed IS to S with my support. I am afraid it was amended out of shape because the original bill was geared to inflation. The more inflation the less taxes for those in the lower bracket., The amendment removed this feature by tying it to the Fed’s income exemptions. I just don’t know how it will fare in the House. It would have cost the State $89 million in 1981-82 and twice that in 1982-83.
The bill to eliminate sales tax on nonprescription drugs was carried over until 1981 by the Senate. However, the oneon heating oil, etc., passed and is on the way to the Governor.
A bill to give the elderly a real estate break by raising the income provision to $15,000 and the assets to $55,000 also passed and is on the way to the Governor. This is strictly a local option bill so it is up to the locality to pass an ordinance before it can be enacted. The retirement bill for State employees is now in the Senate. I supported this one because it did not affect
