Silent Saver
Rappahannock Electric Cooperative will be soliciting 1,200 volunteers from Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties for a new program which engineering sources say can save the memberowned utility up to $300,000 per year in wholesale power costs.
The program centers around a radio-controlled device Rappahannock Electric has dubbed its “silent saver.” The device will turn off hot water heaters in volunteers’ homes for short periods of time on a cycling basis when demand for electricity is high and most costly.
The cooperative will be contacting eligible members by letter this week and plans to have the project in full operation by this summer. Ilie data collected from the pilot project will help the utility determine if it should ’ go systemwide with thedevices as a permanent' means of reducing power costs.
Rappahannock Electric Cooperative studied other successful load management programs in Ohio, North Carolina and Georgia before deciding upon a particular system for introduction to members.
