Salvage Dealers
Must Register
Effective March 1, buyers and sellers of salvage vehicles or vehicle parts will be subject to new regulations intended to curb traffic in stolen vehicles and parts.
Passed into law by the 1979 General Assembly, the Salvage Vehicle Act applies to demolishers, rebuilders, salvage dealers, salvage pools, and, to some extent,' insurance companies.
All, except the insurance companies, are required to register their businesses with the Division of Motor Vehicles, and to follow specific procedures in buying, selling and maintaining records on salvage vehicles and parts.
Insurance companies are subject to certain titling requirements under the Act, and are required to register with DMV when two or more companies comprise a salvage pool.
To request forms for registering with DMV, call any DMV office. For information on whether a firm is covered by the law, call 804-257-0455.
