We Fear For
Their Safety
To the editor:
We live on a dirt road surrounded by hundreds of acres of woodland. The road is thoroughly posted on both sides. During hunting season a road that is normally traveled by half a dozen vehicles a day, becomes a freeway of pick-up trucks, cruising, tossing beer cans and peppering “NO HUNTING” signs with bullets, driving away any deer within miles.
As the parents of two boys who must walk down the dirt road to their bus stop, we fear for their safety. The boys are scared coming and going and resent being restricted to the shadow of our home, unfortunately necessary as long as people feel it is their right to send lethal projectiles across our property. It’s like living in a war zone.!
Our nightmare is that some day, some half-drunk fool sees a motion in the bushes just off the road, shoots at the movement and kills our child playing hide and seek on his own land.
People, who are honest hunters^ should have no fear of regulations preventing behavior that is poor hunting practice. There is no need to cruise to find deer. There are plenty of landowners, if asked, who will allow hunters to roam through their woods if they show they are responsible citizens.
Although, we can appreciate Mr. Luke’s concern for individual liberty, it seems to us that the transgression against landowners and dwellers by the road is of far greater concern.
We hope we can all work together to solve this problem before a tragedy occurs. MR. AND MRS. STEPHEN
