Mrs. Massie maintained that the school system isn’t meeting needs of students who have academic potential but no family background of academics. For those youngsters, college is “something they think they might like but they’re afraid to pursue it if their parents didn’t go,” she said.
Miller agreed. “What the people of Rappahannock County have to understand is that with normal intelligence and perseverance, you can finish college...Nobody I know who flunked out of school flunked out because they were dumb,” said Miller, emphasizing the importance of perseverance.
