The souls were placated for fear they would cast spells and bring havoc on the living, a practice that was the great-greatgrandfather of trick-or-treat. This festival of the dead was gradually incorporated into the Christian practice.

In medieval days and later, fairies, elves and witches who sometimes took the appearance of cats were said to fly on All Hallows Eve. To ward off these spirits, bonfires were lit. Vestiges of these beliefs persisted until recent times and in many communities, bonfires still mark Halloween celebrations.

Halloween festivities are practiced the world over. In Cambodia, for instance, the people intone chants to departed ancestors, bidding them to come and eat food and to bless the living.
