Independent candidate John Anderson of Illinois has been a Republican congressman since 1960.
Once a supporter of Barry Goldwater, Anderson began to break from the conservative mainstream of the Republican party in the 1960’s.
He was an early critic of former President Richard Nixon in the Watergate scandal.
Finally this year he split with the Republican party to form an independent, alternative candidacy, combining politics of social reform with fiscal restraint.
Anderson, 58, is a bornagain member of the fundamentalist First Evangelical Free Church.
To curb inflation, Anderson feels cuts in federal spending should take first priority. Specific tax cuts could be considered once the inflation rate begins to decline, he says. “Talk of a $20 (billion) to $30 billion tax cut may make good election-year rhetoric, but such talk misses the point,” Anderson has said. “How do you balance the budget, cut taxes and increase defense spending at the same time?” Anderson supports a full employment policy, focusing on creation and preservation of private sector jobs.
