Rescue dogs have also proven effective in locating drowning victims, including those partially or totally submerged. Best results have occurred in river or creek searches; however, VSRDA will respond to requests involving any body of water.
Dogs and handlers train up to one year before going into operation, according to VSRDA. In addition, each handler is qualified in advanced first aid or as an emergency medical technician, in wilderness navigation, survival, search strategy and tactics, victim behavior and terrain analysis
Also, every dog-handler team is completely selfcontained, including base camp operation, communications system and complete map file for the entire state.
