Carter even has been criticized for failing to list his accomplishments in his campaign for reelection. The Carter administration, however, is not without accomplishments, some of which directly affect residents of Rappahannock County.

President Carter was instrumental in developing a long-range energy plan for the nation, part of his effort to loosen the grip of the OPEC nations on our economy.

The thrust of Carter’s plan is to promote development of alternate energy sources, especially solar energy and gasohol production. Farmers in Virginias’ Piedmont region have been quick to realize the potential for manufacturing ethanol, major component of gasohol, from locally grown grains, especially corn. Already plans have been approved for several ethanol production or gasohol manufacturing plants in Fauquier County and for an experimental still here in Rappahannock. Without the encouragement from the White House, which quickly filtered down to state and local government levels, gasohol producers would not have made the strides they have made.
