Although there are many who believe the holiday evolved from the Christian Church’s observance of All Saints Day, the real roots of the celebration predate the church by several hundred years. The earliest traces of the practice were derived from the rites of the Druids celebrating the day of Samhain, the Lord of Death, who would call together all the souls of the wicked who had died during the previous year:
