Fires Started

On Median

Passengers in an unidentified vehicle traveling east on Route 211 on Sunday were responsible for a rash of grass fires on the highway median strip.

State Trooper Harry Newlin reported that he knew of four separate fires and had been told there were at least three more between Amissville and Sperryville. According to Newlin, passengers in the east bound vehicle would “go a couple of miles, set a fire, go a couple of more miles and set another one." He 9dded that most of the fires were put out by other motorists who stopped to help. According to Newlin, the fires were started by cherry bombs or similar type of firecracker tossed into the dry grass.
