More communities are arranging special activities and parties to substitute for begging candy door-to-door. In the county this Saturday, the elementary school will host the seventh grade’s Halloween Fun Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On Friday evening, Halloween night, a haunted house for parents and kids is the featured attraction at the Washington Baptist Church from 7 to 8 p.m. Dracula will star at Washington’s Mountain Magic Cinema in two showings of the old classic’s new version at 8 p.m. and midnight with prizes given out for the best costumed movie goer. Also on Friday, Trinity Episcopal Church will have dinner, games, prizes and fortune telling at its Halloween party.

For trick-or-treaters. Sheriff W. A. Buntin offered a few safety hints. He warned youngsters against substituting serious vandalism for tricks and advised tricksters to stick with old fashioned window soaping or draping shrubbery with toilet paper. “With breaking windows, shooting out street lights and throwing apples at automobiles, you’re getting into criminal violations: —even felonies—rather than fun,” he noted.
