The Republican Party of Virginia has lodged a formal •complaint against the Democratic County Committee of Rappahannock for alleged violations of federal election laws.
In a November 3 letter to Rappahannockp Democratic Party co-chairman Aubrey Keyser, J. Curtis Herge of the Federal Election Commission noted that a two column, advertisement appearing in the October 16 edition of the Rappahannock News advocated the election of Jimmy Carter as president. The ad was authorized by the treasurer of the Rappahannock Democratic Party.
According to the Republican’s complaint, the ad violated federal election laws which restrict activities of local party committees. Herge noted that expenditures for newspaper advertisements in support of presidential and vicepresidential candidates can only be made if authorized and reported by the national committee.
