Local hunters argued at supervisor hearings in 1979 and 1980 that hunter control ordinances were not needed in Rappahannock. We’re ready to be convinced. We’d like to see hunters and gun club members unite in policing their own ranks. As pointed out by supporters of Virginia’s Operation Respect (Responsible Educated Sportsmen Promoting Ethical Conduct Together), the assault against unsportsmanlike conduct must be led by sportsmen.
We urge Rappahannock sportsmen to cooperate with the county game warden in reporting hunting violations. Even more importantly, local sportsmen must let their hunting companions know that shooting from the road, hunting on posted property, spotlighting, killing doe out of season, destroying road signs or other private property, dropping trash in the field or any other abuse of the outdoors will not be tolerated. We’re ready to admit that hunter control ordinances aren’t needed here but first Rappahannock sportsmen must demonstrate self-control.
