Information supplied to the News on contributions of the ladies auxiliary to the Washington Volunteer Fire Department was incorrect. In the November 6 editorial, it was stated that the auxiliary had not made a financial contribution to the WVFD for the past several years and that instead, the ladies were saving thrift shop revenue to build a kitchen for the new fire hall still under construction.
According to the secretary of the ladies auxiliary, minutes show that the group gave a total of $10,300 to the WVFD over the past five years: $2,500 in 1975 and the same in 1976; $2,000 in 1977; $800 towards insurance premiums and $500 towards a new ambulance in 1978 and in 1980; $1,500 in cash and $500 on the note held by the Rappahannock National Bank. According to Mrs. Ruth Clark, the ladies auxiliary made these contributions at the same time that the group was amassing substantial savings for the new kitchen.
