Hunting begins in earnest on November 17, the opening day of deer season. We hope the local hunters who worked so diligently to block passage of hunter control laws will try just as hard to persuade their peers to abide by hunting regulations.
Shooting from the road onto posted property is a monumental problem in Rappahannock. Anyone who doubts this has only to drive down a few of the county’s back roads to see pick-up trucks and jeeps cruising at five miles per hour with- riders holding rifles ready. State law forbids shooting from the road but the prohibition has had little impact.
In response to this flagrant abuse, local citizens twice mounted drives here to have legislation passed which would make it illegal to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in a motor vehicle on a public right-of-way or on foot on public rightof-way unless the individual has written permission to hunt from landowners on both sides of the road. Twice the proposed ordinances were defeated by a three-to-two vote on the board of supervisors.
