That first 1979 meeting attracted sportsmen’s groups from around the state as well as representatives from timber companies with large land holdings which traditionally have been opened to hunting.
“The timber companies have had their biggest problems with misuse of offroad vehicles and vandalism of gptes, signs and recreation facilities...There were indications that they would either close their lands or go entirely to a lease basis,” Dennis said.
Problems were put forward for discussion, sportsmen started seeking solutions and out of this came "Operation Respect” with its permanent council composed of representatives from all of Virginia’s sportsmen organizations with more than 500 members.
