Virginia Attorney General Marshall Coleman announced Feb. 16 that he has written to the President and the Secretary of Labor asking for the withdrawal of new regulations imposing wage rates affecting Virginia's tobacco growers and apple producers.
“The implementation of this regulation,” said Coleman, "would drive many small growers and producers out of business and sharply curtail the operations of others.”
The “adverse effect wage rate” for temporary foreign farm workers was originally supposed to protect domestic workers from foreign competition. In recent years, farmers have pointed out the fact that American workers are simply not available for certain farm labor.
