Tragedy struck the Jack Jenkins family last Friday.
Fire broke out in the basement of their brick home on Fodderstack Road and before Washington’s volunteer firemen could reach the scene, the entire roof was in flames.
Onlookers had harsh words for the fire department. We know it was difficult to stand helplessly by and watch a friend’s home and belongings go up in smoke, knowing that tankers and hose were less than a mile away, i By the time the trucks arrived—first Washington, then Flint Hill, Sperryville and Amissville—almost half an hour had elapsed. It was too late.
But even though we can understand the anger of those who watched and could do nothing, we can’t condone the sentiments expressed.
Washington’s fire trucks couldn’t roll without a driver behind the wheel. The driver for the hose truck, the driver for the tanker, the other vital personnel who had to be at the station before the engines could start were working. They had to be reached first at their jobs so
