The extremely dry • conditions that we have experienced since last fall may foreshadow a hazardous spring fire season.
Rainfall, or lack of it, will determine the potential for forest fires this spring. But the actual number of fires that occur will directly depend on precautions and common sense used by all county residents. In past yean, debris burning has corisistcntly been the leading cause of brash and woodland fires in Rappahannock County.
Spring is usually the most fire-prone season. This is because plant matter that has died back over the winter has accumulated on the ground. After a few dry, windy spring days, this accumulation of leaves and brush is highly combustible.
