We have a question for the critics who were so free in their condemnation of the first department. They obviously were close enough to the town to hear the siren . There were a dozen or so men in the yard of the burning house within minutes of the alarm sounding. If they’re so available, why haven’t THEY joined the fire company as volunteers?
There’s no question about it—Washington and Flint Hill were slow arriving at the fire. But look at the reasons. It took precious minutes for the men who risk their lives as fire fighters to (11 learn of the fire and (21 get from their jobs to the fire house.
To avoid this life and property threatening delay, the vocal critics who reached the scene so quickly could volunteer as firemen. We are afraid, however, that they’ll just keep right on doing the same old thing. After all, it’s so much easier to be a critic than a problem solver.
