Virginia Governor John Dalton and his wife Eddy were at Montpelier last weekend for an old fashioned Saturday of country music, picnicking and politicking. Two incumbent delegates, Raymond R. “Andy” Guest and George Beard, were there along with county notables and not-so-notables. But the real star of the day was Lottie Aylor’s lip smacking delicious homemade bar-b-que which drew folks back time and again to the end of the refreshment line on Montpelier’s porch.
The outing was billed as a bipartisan Rappahannock Citizens for Andy Guest rally in support of the Republican incumbent’s re-election as delegate from the newly created 18th legislative district of Rappahannock, Clarke, Warren and Page counties. A five-term veteran of the General Assembly, Guest was the representative of Clarke, Warren, Frederick and the City of Winchester prior to re-districting.
George Beard, Rappahannock's man in Richmond before he was lost to re-districting, led off the political speeches. In a short talk that drew smiles and chuckles from the audience, Beard gave Guest the credit for keeping him out of trouble during his freshman term in the Assembly. The two sat side by side in the delegates’ chambers that year and every time the novice legislator got up to speak—a real “no-no” for the first trip down to Richmond—Guest would tug on his shirt tail and whisper, “Not now
Barbecue Dinner
The Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a chicken barbecue dinner on Saturday, October 17, at the Fire house. The dinner is $3.50 and will be served from 4 to 7 p.m.
