we’ll always very fondly say ’Bradford’s,” Lillard promised. The business first opened in the 1920s as Carey’s Store House. "Boo’s dad had a place on the comer. He took over here in 1930 and changed the name to Bradford’s,” Frances recalled. "Boo’s had it since the '40s when his father died.” “I’ve been working here close to 60 years. I helped my father when I was a boy,” her husband added.
Back in the old days, Bradford’s was a country store with a dash of something special. From 1946 to 1966, upstairs was ^transformed into toyland for. Christmas shoppers, much to the delight of local youngsters.
“We had over 1,000 people here every year on Thanksgiving to see Santa,” said Frances.
“I remember that!’’ chimed in Jean’s sister Judy Smith, back home from Arizona for a visit. “I’d never seen so many toys in all my life. That’s when I sat on Santa’s lap.”
Santa quit coming when the Bradfords’ kids stopped believing and the magical toyland was remodeled into upstairs apartments.
But Bradford’s kept its dash of something special. Frances had been making sandwiches in the warehouse rooms next door. Business was so brisk that she and Boo decided to open a snack barrestaurant in the space.
