Dalton followed Beard to the microphone to call for the re-election of both Republican incumbents. Beard and Guest share the “less government is better government” philosophy that reflects the traditional views of rural Virginians, the Governor said. Guest was the final speaker, promising to represent the wishes of his constituents in Richmond and to work to preserve a Commonwealth worth living in for their children and grandchildren. The oratory was short —short in length, short in standard political rhetoric and short on the issues raised in the 1981 campaign. Politickin’ at Montpelier on: Saturday was more personal, rather than crowd directed, with all the politicians circulating through the audience, listening to concerns and enjoying friendly conversation—and good food.
