Chinese, in particular, treasure ginseng and will pay small fortunes for the oddly shaped roots that are supposed to be especially powerful. According to Baldwin, his dried ginseng now fetches $160 a pound, and that’s just for the ordinary stuff.

“I chew ginseng every day of my life. It’s not a dope—it’s an herb, the oldest herb on the market. It’s good for the whole body. I eat a piece of it every day of my life and I’m 54 years old and pick all my own apples for my fruit stand—sometimes 150 bushels in two, three days,” Baldwin reported. "I work 15, 16 hours a day, seven days a week. I think ‘seng’ will do everything they say it will do!”
