Demand identification from persons collecting for charity. Be suspicious of anyone who will not volunteer identification.
Refuse to commit yourself over the telephone to solicitors. Ask the person to mail you the information before you commit yourself to a donation and before you give, find out if the charity is registered with either the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Office of Consumer Affairs or your local licensing office.
Virginia law requires most all organizations which solicit funds to have an application on file with one or the other.
