renovations are needed to bring the jail in compliance with State Department of Corrections Standards. The county has been forced to ship prisoners to other counties because of the space shortage in Rappahannock, he added.
The situation got even worse last July when Fauquier County, because of overcrowding in its own jail, slopped taking prisoners from Rappahannock. Buntin said Rappahannock now ships prisoners “wherever we can find a vacant bed." The sheriff added that the county would "be glad to get anything we can" in terms of state funding. But, he noted, if the county does not get state help the board of supervisors may be hesitant lo fund the project on its own.
