Donna did find a resource in her long struggle to be able to support herself. Vocational Rehabilitation services in Culpeper assisted her in negotiating with a reluctant insurance company. “The deal was that I should be re-trained in a career my health would permit,” Donna said. “Mr. Tuck Baker has spent hours trying to arrange a fair settlement.”
At first, Donna’s rehabilitation took the form of school. She took a year’s course at Lord Fairfax aimed at making her a soil conservation technician. Government cutbacks terminated this option.
With the help of Mr. Baker, Donna set out to learn harnessmaking, a skill that would keep her close to the life and the people and horses she loved. “I knew quite a lot about tack,” she
