With Pali Allan carrying Gabriel, Freeman Allan hoisted Daniel, kicking and sobbing, into his arms and lumbered hastily to the nearest exit. On the drive home Allen held Daniel in his arms and simultaneously offered him some chocolate from the airport shop. Daniel vehemently continued to refuse, every time pushing it away from his face. Halfway home, Mrs. Allan pulled the car into a fast food restaurant.
Chocolate “Key”
Allan recalls, “While Pali was in the fast food place, I tried to put the chocolate in his mouth again. He pushed my hand away. I tried it a second time and he took it. From then on he was putty in our hands. He just had to make that one jump of accepting front us ■ and recognizing that we were the people that had been writing to him for months.”
Besides the frequent letters, many months of preparation and paper work transpired previous to Daniel’s adoption, the norm for foreign adoption proceedings. Both Freeman and Pali Allen had done social work abroad. Freeman with Mother Teresa and the Sisters of Charity in Calcutta and Pali with the Peace Corps in Indonesia.
When they decided to adopt a child, Allan’s experience in India was particularly influential in their decision to adopt an orphan from Mother Theresa’s Missionaries of Charity orphanage. (Both attribute Daniel’s vivacious, loving nature to the treatment and example he received from the Sisters.) Having made their decision, the Allans contacted Cathy Schreedar, an adoption agent who has been placing children from Mother Theresa’s orphanage for nine years. “Cathy has placed over nine hundred children; only one of these placements has - not worked out,” observed Pali. “She knows what kind of people she’s looking for—what kind of people are right for adopting and what kids belong with what parents.”
