8. For want of pure and plentiful water, wars have been fought, fertile lands have become deserts, nations have disappeared. Even the survival and limited growth of Washington, Va., the county seat of Rappahannock County, was threatened.
In pagan cultures the water spirits were revered and worshiped. In all civilizations the person who could find and produce water has been honored. The Rappahannock County entry in this competition, which was not only world wide but history long, was an outsider, Larry LeHew, from Warren County. Larry was considered qualified because he has been accepted as the joint-master of the Rappahannock Hunt; because he knows the terrain of the county; has dug many wells in the county and because of his special achievement in finding a full flowing well for “Little Washington” when all others had despaired.
Larry is a thorough water seeker. He is willing to use the help of dowsers, of prayer, of geologists from the University of Virginia, and then go it on his own. Since there was no contemporary world quality opposition to Larry, although de-salinizers in Saudi Arabia were considered, a few write-ins for Moses were accepted. Larry contends that there is good reason to believe that Moses struck a good number of rocks with his rod, without success, before he finally hit the right one in the desert and saved the Israelites.
A further test and demonstration of Larry LeHew’s trustworthiness occurred just after the water began to flow from the new well in Washington; When the word came that the well could not be put on line in the city water system until approved by the Virginia Department of Health, Larry lay down on the ground, drank the rising water, and declared it perfect and fit for human use—facts sustained by the state testers. Larry is also qualified to test and give advice on other potables.
9. Choosing a most trusted consumer protector was a serious challenge because of the wide range of human needs that seem to have attracted the protectors and because of the number of specialists in the field.
