Action on the courts is heating up as the 1983 Rappahannock County Tennis Tournament approaches the end of first round competition.
After defeating Ully Maeyer (6-4, 6-1), Rod Kirkpatrick will face number one seed Keith Hutchinson, winner of the 1982 men’s singles division who had a bye in round one singles this year.
Dennis Fairbrother, also accorded a bye in the opening round, will face the winner of the Steve ScogginChamp Carney bout set for later this week.
After defeating Nicholas Bischoff (6-1, 6-2), Donald Brown will take on the victor in the match between Phillip Strange and David Crump.
Bobby D. Gehringer downed Keaton Barnes (6-1. 6-2) and now will meet Steve Parlegreco, the number two seed and runner-up in the 1982 men’s singles division.
Men’s Doubles
The defending champions in men’s doubles, Dennis Fairbrother and Jens Tholand, will challenge the winners of the Nicholas Bischoff and Keith Hutchinson match this Friday with Ully Maeyer and Butch Eastham.
The team of Willy Zuco and Phillip Strange will take on the duo of Steve Parlegreco and Steve Ellis and then the winners will go up against Tom Massie and Fanning Baumgardner.
The Gehringer fatherson team plays David Crump and Bill Sharp and the winners will advance to battle Jon Lee and Paul Ruisi.
Keaton Barnes and Champ Carney will play the winners of the match between Donald Brown/Rayner Snead and Rod Kirkpatrick/Steve Scoggins.
Mixed Doubles
There were no seeds awarded in mixed doubles competition since none of last year’s winning combinations entered as teams in the 1983 tournament.
This year’s line-up includes Tom Massie and Poala Parlegreco playing Jean Lillard and Bobby Gehringer with the winners facing Steve Parlegreco and Sharon Luke.
Donald Brown and Diane Bruce will go agains the husband-wife F airbrother team. Nicholas Bischoff and Marge Exton will take on the victors.
Another husband-wife duo, Phillip and Merril Strange, will face another couple, Richard and Page Johanson. Oily Maeyer and Theresa McLawhorn will play the winners.
Two husband-wife teams, Ruth and Fanning Baumgardner and Susan and Champ Carney, will battle across the nets. Winners will play the victorious duo in the Willy Zuco/Dutchy
