Diane Elizabeth Kidwell of Flint Hill was tried at the courthouse in Washington last March for the November, 1982, shooting death of Ranee Spellman, manager of Points of View Farm.
After deliberating for eight hours, the jury announced a deadlock and Judge Thomas Horne declared a mistrial. Reportedly, the 12 jurors split 11-1, the majority in favor of acquittal on the grounds that Kidwell acted in self-defense when she shot Spellman while he was operating a bulldozer on the right-ofway that serves the Kidwell property and three lots belonging to the farm manager’s employer, Patricia Saltonstall.
