The lead story in the Rappahannock
News was headlined Vicious dogs attract no supporters. The reporter was referring to a proposal before the supervisors to double dog fees. No members of the public appeared to argue against the measure, and it passed unanimously.
Also before the board was approval of the Line of Duty Act, making local rescue squadsmen and volunteer firemen eligible for $10,000 in death benefits if killed in the line of duty.
In announcing plans for the annual fireworks display at Avon Hall, William Carrigan said: “Let us remember that the fourth of July is not a partisan affair, but a day for all people to enjoy in celebration. It is truly a day for all people to celebrate together.”
An editorial addressed the problems in Sperryville. Dr. R. S. Legarde had pointed out to the supervisors the previous week that Sperryville was dealing with its raw sewage by dumping it in the Thornton River, a situation that could “close Sperryville down.” The editorial stated: “No one who cares about the quality of life in Rappahannock County or Virginia should disagree with Chairman Newbill Miller’s response to the problem posed by the county’s chief health officer: I won’t tell you to close down Sperryville, but I’m not going to tell you to violate the law.
