A year and a halt ago, Eldon upgraded its stables, bringing in eight horses from the 292,000-acre Bell Ranch in Texas, “Cowboys at the Bell Ranch are each assigned six horses in their strings. They get them when they’re yearlings. They break them, train them and if they don’t come out right, they’re got no one to blame but themselves,” Leake said of Eldon’s sister stock farm, also owned and managed by Lane Corporation.
The horses unloaded in Woodville were trained cow ponies, predominantly quarter horse breeding, wise to the ways of horned critters.
Their riders at Eldon had no special training. All with some experience around horses, they mounted up and learned cowboyin’ by doing’. . . .
Leake’s experience is typical. “I’ve been around horses, ponies and mules all my life. I’ve had quarter horses since I was ten years old. Used to barrel run in the fields when 1 was a kid.”
