'“You couldn’t work for a better man,” Rappahannock County Sheriff John Henry Woodward says with determination, “he was excellent.”
The Reverend Jennings W. Hobson III, of Trinity Episcopal Church, says, “he’s a man I have admired for a long time.” He pauses to explain that “he gets the job done because he quietly does it.”
“He was a fine law enforcement officer,” says Virginia State Trooper Rufus Baines, “and he is a gentleman.”
This year, the Rappahannock News in continuing its tradition of honoring a person who serves the citizens of Rappahannock County beyond the call of duty, is extremely proud to name W.A. Buntin as our Citizen of the Year for 1985.
Mr. Buntin served this county as its sheriff for two consecutive terms beginning in 1975. He won both elections in landslide victories. Before beginning his duties as Sheriff, he was a officer of the Virginia State Police for 29 years; all of his.years in that capacity were spent in service to this county.
Mr. Buntin, who is a native of Halifax County, was raised on a tobacco farm and graduated from Halifax County High School. He latter served nearly four years in the United States Army as a military policeman.
