Rappahannock citizens overwhelmingly endorsed the historic Democratic ticket in the November election. Citizens voted to elect Democrat Gerald L. Baliles over Republican Wyatt B. Durette with a vote count of 930 to 743 respectively.
In the race for Lieutenant Governor, Democrat L. Douglas Wilder defeated Republican John Chichester 845 to 806.
Democrat May Sue Terry handily defeated Republican W.R. (“Buster") O’Brien in the race for Attorney General with a vote of 1,011 to 649. Number 4 — Drought hits county
Signs of trouble began in April. On the 27th of that month the rainfall was 1.04 inches according to local weather observer Dennis Wingfield. The figures for 1984 and 1983 at the same time were 5.17 and 9.3 inches respectively.
It was also in April when a late freeze hit, followed with unseasonably warm weather. At the time Extension Agent Birgitt Thornhill said, “It might be worse this year — the heat is hitting earlier. ”
Indeed it got worse. The drought severly impacted the local peach production to the point where Thomas Lee of Washington said “I don’t think anybody dead or alive has seen this. There’s never been anything like it. It’s just a failure."
